How to read a Scentorian page

Every fragrance page is built the same way, so a reader can tell a cited detail from an impression at a glance.

Cited details. The published notes, the perfumer, the launch year and the formulation record each carry a source you can open. A note pyramid lists the notes in the tiers the house published; an untiered list means the house named its materials without ordering them, and the page says so. Beyond the house name and Scentorian's own classifications, a detail without a source is left out rather than guessed. We classify each source as one of the house's own publication, a regulator's record, a named editorial publication and counted community reports, and every fragrance page lists its sources at the foot.

Impressions. A description of how a fragrance wears is a summary of reports, never a measurement. Where the reports were counted, the page says how many independent reports the description is drawn from, and from how many venues. Our usual minimum is at least 10 independent reports from at least 2 separate venues; below that threshold the page still shows the counts and says where they fall short. No description on this site is an older one without counted reports.

The current bottle. Each fragrance page carries one of 5 formulation statuses:

• No material change reported: a cited record reports no material difference between bottles.
• Improved on the previous formulation: a cited record describes the current bottle as better than the earlier formulation.
• Weaker than the previous formulation: a cited record describes the current bottle as weaker than the earlier formulation.
• Reports differ on changes between bottles: reports exist and disagree about what changed; the page describes the disagreement rather than choosing a side.
• No reformulation record found in the sources reviewed: no record of a change was found in the sources reviewed, which does not show that the formula has stayed the same.

Families, category and concentration. Scent families and the market category are Scentorian's own browsing classifications, drawn from the published notes; no house is bound by them. The concentration is shown as a standard label, such as eau de parfum or parfum, drawn from what the house declares; it is a classification, not a cited fact.

Retailer links. Where a page carries a retailer link, the link is marked as paid with a disclosure beside it, and a marketplace listing is named as one next to the link. Those arrangements do not change our descriptions of a fragrance's notes, wear or formulation record.
